PFAS

PFAS is very much a part of our everyday lives and yet most of us know very little to nothing about them. For #plasticfreejuly, we want to share what we have learnt so far about these "forever chemicals".

PFAS("Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances") are synthetic chemicals that resist grease, oil, water and heat. The strength and stability of the chemical bonds make them persistent in the environment and resistant to biodegradation.

They were first developed and used ion the 1930s. Now, they are in the hundreds of everyday products such as Fabrics that are stain-resistant, carpets, fodd wrappers, cleaning products, fire-fighting foams and more.

Certain PFAS have been authorized by the FDA for limited use in cookware, food packaging and food processing.

There is sufficient evidence that PFAs are everywhere and forever. Several studies suggest that exposure to PFAs is harmful to human and animal health.

Why are PFAS harmful?

Due to their nature, PFAS has been found in our drinking water sources and also in our bloodstream. During production and use, they can migrate into the soil, water and air.

Studies have proven that PFAS cause several health issues. They have been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, immune system suppression, reproductive and developmental issues.

There is no legal requirement for the companies to disclose the presence of PFAs in their products. As consumers we have to ensure that we keep PFAS out of our homes.

At DearEarth, we believe that mindful consumption of natural products is the best way forward.
